With his
usual unerring perception and expertise, Geoff Love has established an
outstanding and highly popular series of albums under the generic title of
"The Singers And The Song". The key to its success lies with two
factors. One is the basic simplicity of his approach to the material he selects.
Geoff believes in allowing good songs to speak for themselves without
unnecessary frills and furbelows in the arrangements, thereby avoiding
superfluous adornments which more often than not can complicate and confuse the
net result. The other is his talent and experience allied to the talent and
performing ability of the singers and musicians whom he directs, who are amongst
the best there are in Britain. Geoff's experience includes working with and
earring the unstinted admiration of some of the world’s most famous stars.
Shirley Bassey, Paul Robeson, the late Judy Garland, and Howard Keel are just.
four who have had the considerable advantage of his musical skill at their
disposal at various times and the considerable pleasure of working with one of
the sunniest and most affable personalities in British show business. Born in
Todmorden, Yorkshire, Geoff has that invaluable gift of putting everyone at
their ease, and by the same token, obtaining the very best from them, no matter
how auspicious, daunting and nerve-racking the occasion may be.
This latest selection from Geoff Love and his
Singers and Orchestra is as romantic and sentimental as its title song, Close To
rou, suggests. This Burt Bacharach/Hal David gem makes an ideal opener for a
programme which includes David Gates' If recently a huge hit for actor TeIly
Savalas; It's Impossible, recorded by Perry Como What a Wonderful World, forever
linked with the late and wonderful Louis Armstrong, and Passing Strangers,
immortalised originally in the evergreen songbook by Sarah Vaughan and Billy
Eckstein. Also present is the effectively unusual Charles Fox/Norman Gimbel
ballad Killing Me Softly With His Song; George Harrison's Something; a tasteful
look at the classical sphere in So Deep Is The Night, and I'm Stone In Love With
You,
which
recently brought Johnny Mathis hack to the hit parade.
So once
again it's our pleasure to bring you Geoff Love, his singers and the songs, and
an album which we are sure you will want to keep close to you always.
